Responsibilities

  • Obtain and accurately document comprehensive medical and ophthalmic histories utilizing an ophthalmic-based Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system.

  • Perform preliminary examination screenings, including:

    • Visual acuity (distance and near)

    • Pupil assessment

    • Confrontational visual fields

    • Tonometry

  • Perform diagnostic imaging, including Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and fundus photography as needed.

  • Assist physicians with office-based procedures such as:

    • Intraocular injections of medications

    • Laser photocoagulation

    • Pneumatic retinopexy

  • Prepare examination rooms with necessary supplies, instruments, and medications to ensure efficiency and patient safety.

  • Maintain and clean ophthalmic instruments and equipment according to established protocols.

  • Demonstrate working knowledge of ophthalmic terminology, anatomy, and diagnostic procedures.

  • Develop competency and proficiency using advanced EMR systems (MDI), digital imaging systems, and electronic prescription programs.

  • Communicate effectively and compassionately with patients, physicians, and staff to ensure excellent patient care and smooth clinic flow.

  • Accurately relay physician instructions to patients and coordinate with other departments or referring offices when needed.

  • Assist with patient flow to ensure timely and efficient operation of the clinic.

  • Travel to local offices as needed to meet business demands.

  • Participate in ongoing training, educational meetings, and cross-departmental collaboration.

  • Maintain strict patient and practice confidentiality (HIPAA compliance).

  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the clinical supervisor, office manager, or physician.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.

  • COA or COT certification preferred but not required.

  • Minimum of 1 year of recent ophthalmic or clinical technician experience preferred.

  • Ability to learn new skills, information, and procedures quickly.

  • Excellent computer proficiency and ability to navigate multiple software programs simultaneously.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain instructions clearly and compassionately to patients.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving abilities and sound clinical judgment.

  • Professional demeanor with strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment.

  • Experience in patient triage, tonometry, and assisting physicians with minor office procedures preferred.

  • Reliability, flexibility, and willingness to travel between local office locations as business needs require.

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, patient-centered environment.
